Prior to 2004, I had no formal artistic training of any sort. My only creative mediums were those with which my traditional mother had acquainted me - cooking and sewing. In 2004, I received an e-mail advertisement from my employer, offering a Monart class for non-artists. Since I was teaching alternative students of whom a high percentage were artistically talented, I was attracted by this offer to bring art into my classroom. I immediately signed on and became hooked, and I am now greatly enjoying my new pastime.
Being a student of Linda Hansen and the Monart method, I believe that each stroke of the brush or pencil is meant to be. As the artist, it is my job to discover its purpose and to unify the strokes into a harmonious whole. My work is not laborious, and I do not seek exact realism.
I am pleased with the opportunity to share what I have done, and hope that it brings meaningful pleasure to you, as it does to me.
My work has been shown at the following locations in the Williamsburg area: Citizen's and Farmer's Bank, Solo Artist, August 2007; Kinks, Quirks, and Caffeine, as part of the 2008 Williamsburg Art Escape Weekend; local show at First Colony, October 2008; Norge Dental Clinic, November 2008; Norge Dental Clinic, April 2009. I will also be showing at the Greater Lanexa Studio Tour, October 2009.

I started painting 13 years ago and am basically self taught, and go to as many workshops that I can afford. I love to paint, and I hope you enjoy the paintings as much as I have enjoyed painting them.

Since the early 1990s, my work has involved the creation of conceptually based sociopolitical paintings and drawings. At the onset of the war in Iraq, I began a series of small books of drawings that told of our anxieties concerning the mayhem, and corresponding economic impact and religious or political issues presented by the media. One body of work combines drawings with items I have discovered that are relevant to a series. The prints that result from this juxtaposition are then de-constructed further by selectively hand coloring with oil paint. For the first I did a series of mono prints de constructing the hyper patriotism I find so revolting. The second series began during the completion of the first. It has some of the background visuals of the first series, but the thrust is women who use guns. My work addresses gender roles/gender assignment, the fragility of family dynamics, domestic violence, underlying threads of violence and dangers Inherent to American society, as well as clichés. Often times these themes are combined into a series that feature mundane domestic objects corrupted by a general fear permeating our atmosphere. The colors I use exceed the wheel and establish a quality that suggests our need to defeat nature or just anything that our farming culture finds in our way on the brightest and prettiest day of the year. Maybe Easter. Form is corrupted by layers of lines and by strokes of paint woven into the landscape of the work. Events in the world mesh with unrelated events that occurred simultaneously to create an idea that really is a lie.
I usually work on several bodies of work at the same time. Microbes serve as an ongoing theme for a large series in oil on canvas, vector art on museum quality paper and over 80 digital renderings done as artist proofs. My interest takes in the reality of our relationship with microorganisms and on a larger scale, my belief in a high degree of intelligence in all life.

The seven specific bodies of work that I am working on concurrently:

“Tanzanian special needs children”- a series of naturalistic pen renderings. I began the series in 2006 after I returned from Lushoto Tanzania. My experience with the students of Irente Rainbow School was life-altering. I have been In touch with my friends there and have given when I can. A percentage of every sale goes to the school. Soon after returning home one of the men I became friends with was killed by highway robbers. That incident has caused me to stay with black and white for the faces and people renderings. Only recently (Last week) have I gone back to color with that series.

“Patridiot” In 2007, I began this series of over 50 large prints based on the book and guts and veins between their teeth mentality of the people in charge, and the fog that keeps us from seeing the lies. The work does not focus on the soldier or technology as much as our mislead feelings of the war here at home. It is the goal of my work to more fully represent the long nightmare of violence and the pap that shows up as consumer psychosis.

“Girls with guns”- In 2007, I began working with the phenomenon of the female love affair with guns. This series is produced as artist proofs and uses drawings from my books, and imagery of women and handguns, hand grenades, bombs and incarceration. Most of the work has a photorealistic burnt section of the American flag as its background. The women with weapons are rendered in very stark fashion using colors that stay in a pastel range. Some of my drawings are combined with each piece. Sometimes something like
A woman whose head is being pushed into a car hood by a policeman, or a smiling seraphim looking on as the main subject strikes an almost pornographic pose.

Works on Paper- My works on paper tend to differ from my oil paintings and prints. These works are very personal pieces that have been inspired by and made of particular people in my life most of whom are African. Most of the renderings show activities of special needs workers and children as well as daily work.

“bacteriart”- Very colorful vector and photoshop based prints and large oil paintings that investigate the relationship of microbes to mankind. Some of the over 100 renderings are given bright child-like hues to remove any sense of having to have viewed these animals under a microscope. Some are used in another world landscape in which the microbes are really breasts or pizzas or any thing we see around the house. The lighting and coloring suggest both an underwater environment and the landscape of Namibia, Africa.

“Reassembled Flowers”- of various exotic forms are taken apart and reassembled into a new kind of plant life. The work comes from my feeling that anything exotic or different is not easily remembered correctly, and our neurons put imagery together for our memory in strange untruths that we are sure are factual. The inspiration for this series is from the early etchings of wild animals from foreign lands that had very many inaccuracies...to the point of hilarity.

“CowZ”- A take off from the microbe projects as an effort to combine bovine bodies with microbes and myriad of colors. The series is very colorful and fun. Everyone loves cows. Maybe colorful bioengineered cows will be loved too.

My crobes. Understood: everyone is afraid of what they cannot see. Mostly in the form of harmless bacteria. So, what if bacteria were colorful and friendly? Or what if bacteria on a phone looked like colorful phones under the microscope? And, what if the presentation was in a huge format of beautiful shapes and colors that we are not usually exposed to? I don’t know what if…but, I am trying that.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, I found my way to my homeland by following the siren’s song of the horse. From the East to the West and finally to the Southwestern desert, I sang for a living and learned the way of the horse for loving. A romantic to the core, I was ultimately drawn to the camera as a means of sharing the magnificent details I see in every facet of God’s glorious creation.

When I was just a small child, my grand mother gave me a needle with some bright colors of thread and taught me how to do simple embroidery. My mother who used to do the most beautiful intricate crochet work also taught me the beginning stitches of crochet. My grand mother would take me across the creek, in the summer to an old dumping site that hadn’t been used in many years to search for what we called treasure. Bit’s and pieces of pottery, old metal pieces, old bottles were among the many treasures we would find there. She taught me to look at what something could be as apposed to simply what it was. That is where my art career started. That gift has come in handy through out my years as a mixed media artist, scenic artist and prop master, winning many awards and scholarships in the process.
Most of the work you see here today is inspired by a huge blessing I received almost three years ago. My beautiful grand daughter, Gracilynn Mae and the honor of being a grand mother and getting to see the world new again through her eyes. I hope you enjoy this work.

#17 ~ Carlos Vaughn

R. Carlos Vaughn, Carlos, born in 1963 in the deep south, has since a little boy in tow with his grandfather, Travis Seabolt, had great passion and appreciation for the outdoors. In 1997 God intertwined His supernatural divine inspiration with Carlos’ love for wildlife and his spiritual gifting for art together and created Fisher of Men. The original sculpture was hand carved from a block of cherry wood. In early 1998 the color version of Fisher of Men was created with even greater detail than the sculpture. The original master painting was done in water color combined with prismacolor pencil. Later that same year Carlos was once again inspired to yet another level of detail and created the black and white version of Fisher of Men. The black and white master rendering is primarily done in a stippling technique. The world vision for this piece of art work will by the anointing of the Holy Spirit minister Jesus the Messiah to the Jew, salvation to the lost and bring a fresh enlightenment to the fish as a Christian symbol to the church.

Let me take a moment to thank you, and allow you a glimpse into who I am.

I was born in a small town just south of Atlanta GA, Dec. 24th 1961. My 4 younger sisters and I were raised on biscuits and gravy, fried chicken, and butter beans. My parents did the best they could on daddy’s $9,000.00 annual income. We raised our food from the yard and mother made our clothes. Life was very simple then.

I married young (age 15); never had any children, worked several jobs as a young teen, and eventually found my calling as a small time model and exotic dancer. This allowed me to break the chains of an underprivileged background and learn about the outside world. I worked my way through the industry until my introduction to Playboy magazine in 1989. During my 20’s I managed to be photographed and published over 30 times in many of Playboy special edition magazines, including the cover of Playboys “Girls of Summer” 1990.

This was the beginning of a “Jet Set” lifestyle which took me around the world as a feature performer. I met celebrities, and dated beefy guys. I experienced VIP treatment and many other things that few people from my background ever have the chance to do. I couldn’t have imagined in my wildest dreams a country girl like myself would ever have such a chance.

I began drawing spiritual and visionary art by age 5 and as a young teen I progressed into fantasy art. I spent most of my time drawing for friends, family, the school newspaper, anyone and everyone who asked. I actually spent time in the principle’s office for too much drawing and little of anything else.

My creative side totally ruled my life and eventually I opened a costume design company in 1990 under the name Bod-A-Bing Designs and began sculpting and designing exotic clothing and accessories for Las Vegas showgirls and other specialty boutiques. In 2005 I decided to try my hand at painting. I started out with abstract and experiment with fantasy, visionary and surrealism. I feel my work leans towards raw, dark, powerful, passionate, sometimes disturbing and uplifting all at the same time. People ask me, what is it I paint? My answer is feelings.

My art is my only source of income. I live a modest life, filled with appreciation and gratefulness. I wish only to express all that I am in my work. My life has thus far been a varied and colorful journey. I hope others will find inspiration in the art which stems from these experiences, and that a piece of it will find its place in your home.

May you be blessed.

Sincerely
Methec

photo of Margaret Older

I am a mostly self-taught watercolorist, aged 68, retired, painting for fun and occasionally for money. I got interested in drawing and painting at the age of 14 when my step-father gave me a book of semi-nude and nude women to use as a reference for pencil drawings. I did very well and it inspired me to take art classes in my Sophomore and Junior years in high school. I went on to dabble in watercolor, acrylic and oils over the years. Husband and children side-lined my art for a while but at the age of 40, newly divorced, children gone and time on my hands, I turned to art once again and have never stopped since then.
I have survived two divorces and been widowed once. Now, happily remarried for almost 6 years, my current husband supports my artistic endeavors totally. Life is good. I look for the beauty in life every day and I hope that is reflected in my artwork. Florals are my favorite subject matter but I try other subjects too.

photo of Joyce James

#23 ~ Joyce James

I live outside a small (pop. 300) town in Kentucky. I grew up in this town in the 50's and early 60's.

I have been widowed twice and am now married to my childhood sweetheart, David Kenneth "Kenny" James. We were both living away from here when we got back together in 2005. Then in 2006, we decided to move back "home" to be closer to family and friends. Together, we have seven children, eight grandchildren, and two beautiful great-grandsons.

My brother, the late Glynn H. Scott, was an artist. I often felt that I could paint if given the time and the motivation. Finally thru encouragement from Kenny (actually, he was rather pushy about it), I tried and, as they say, the rest is history.

As a self-taught artist, I started in the spring of 2008. In June and September of 2009, I went to Oklahoma for instruction from Jerry Yarnell at "Yarnell's School of Fine Art". Then in October 2009, he came to Bardstown, KY for some workshops. I was able to attend two (4 days total) of the workshops. In July, I attended a workshop held by Colorado wildlife artist Ed Aldridge.

In February of 2010, I went back to Oklahoma for 2 more workshops (4 days) with Jerry Yarnell. One of those paintings is hanging in my kitchen. Then in March, back to Oklahoma again. This time for 2 days of general instruction. In April, I went to Georgia to take 4 workshops over a 5 day period with Gary Jenkins from Nevada.

I love to paint and try to paint what I love. I hope this shows thru in my art. Hopefully, my art can bring some joy and peace into the lifes of those who see it.

All of my talent is a gift from God and I give all glory and honor to Him.

Without God, I am nothing; with Him:
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Phil. 4:13
